Shopping Smart in 2015: A Clothing Budget

Source: www.pascheusa.com
Happy Monday Fashion Friends!  Today is the first Monday of 2015, so I'm sure that many people are highly focused on their New Year's Resolutions, Goals, and the like.  So, today is Part I of the series Shopping Smart in 2015.  One of my goals for 2015 is to create and stay within a clothing budget.  I rarely, if ever pay full price for any clothing item, which means I am a sucker for a sale and, oftentimes, fall a victim to buying something because it's a great deal.  As I decluttered and purged my closet at the end of last year, I realized that I really do need to shop less and more intentionally.  I believe that creating a budget and sticking to it each month, will certainly help me to be more fiscally responsible.

Spend on Clothing

Why do I need a budget and how do I create a clothing budget?  I believe that it is important to have a clothing budget as it will likely help to curb most of the thoughtless shopping and hold your accountable for your spending on clothes.  Clothing is a necessity and many women shop often anyway, so a budget will help you to streamline your shopping.  Your budget will vary depending on your income, financial goals, your line of work, family situation, and the presence of any extenuating circumstances i.e. job loss, recent purchase of a home, car, or the like, and/or a pregnancy or recent delivery.  Most financial experts suggest setting your budget between 2%-6% of your net (take home) monthly income.  The most popular amount was 5%.  To figure out exactly how much that is for you, multiply your take-home pay (for the month) by .05, and there you have your monthly clothing budget.  You may want to reduce that amount if you are focusing on reducing debt, saving for a vacation, currently losing weight, or you or your spouse/significant other recently experienced a job loss and if you are required to wear a uniform to work.

How do I stick to my budget?  Now that you know how much you are allotted to spend each month, you have to stick to it.  One key step to sticking to your budget is to record your purchases in a spending log. Go out and buy (from the Dollar Tree) or look around your house for a notebook that you can dedicate to recording your purchases.  It'll be impossible to keep up with your spending without writing it down in one place; also hold on to all receipts just in case you need to return something.
It is okay to save your budget and do a couple big shopping trips at different points throughout the year or if you don't spend all in one month, add it on to the next month's budget and NEVER feel like you have to spend all of your monthly budget.  Try your absolute best NOT to exceed your budget, but if you do, deduct it from the following month's budget or return an item or two to take you below your budget.  You may miss the mark here or there, but the longer you do it, the better you get at it.  At the end of each month, review your spending log and what items you bought and monitor and adjust accordingly the following month.  Who's in with me?!?  I'll post my spending for the month at the end of the month.

Have a great Monday and shop responsibly!

Plaid to the Bone

Shirt (old)- F21(Similar, Similar, Similar)~ Jeans (old)- The Limited (Similar, Similar)~ Boots (old)- Fergie via Belk (Similar, Similar)~ Hat- F21 ( Similar, Similar)

It's Tuesday Fashion Friends and almost a new year!  Today's post is a casual and very laid back one.  Let's be honest, no one is dressed up and "on it" everyday; I for one am not.  Being off of work for two weeks, this look is nearly a uniform for me.  A simple top or sweater and pair of jeans is a winner.  If you've been reading my blog from the beginning, then you likely remember that one of my first posts was about purchasing staple pieces at the end of a season at a highly reduced price.  Well, these boot are another example of me doing just that and shopping strategically.  I bought these boots from Belk in either January or February; the regular price was $110 and I paid $38 for them.  With January just a day or so away, you will see the final Winter items on clearance to make room for the new Spring lines to usher their way into stores (long before the start of Spring).  Over the next few weeks, be on the look out for staple pieces that you can wear again next Winter and in the years to come.
**One great clearance sale going on New Years Day is at The Limited, they will have an extra 70% off of select sale items and 40% off of new arrivals.
**This weekend  (Jan.3rd & 4th), The Limited will have an extra 60% off of all sale items.
**Also, check out Old Navy today (New Year's Day) as they have many great Winter pieces on clearance as well.  Use the code NEWYEAR to get an extra 30% off of your entire purchase.
Happy Shopping!

Sweater Dress Saves the Day

Dress-(old) NY&Co. (Similar, Similar, Similar)~ Tights-(old) The Limited (Similar, Similar, Similar)~ Booties- (old) Jessica Simpson via Belk (Similar)~  Hat- Forever 21-  (Similar, Similar)~ Handbag- (old) The Limited (Similar)~ Necklace- Purple Peridot

Happy Tuesday Fashion Friends!  On the 11th day of Christmas my favorite blogger gave to me... A great new post and a renewed promise to post more regularly.  I know it's been awhile, but the end of semester, work, and other obligations really got the best of me for a minute, but I AM BACK
One of my go-to, quick and easy pieces for the Winter is a sweater dress.  I have several that I can wear alone or with a cardigan; wear to work, church or out to dinner.  The one I'm wearing is one of my favorites; I bought it last year from New York and Company (it was a part of the Eva Mendes line).  I usually wear this one to church because of the modest length, but it really could be worn other places as well.  One way that I make a rather simple sweater dress pop is with a great pair of printed tights.  I own between 10-15 pair and get a lot of wear out of them.  The booties are also from last year from Belk and I absolutely LOVE them!  The heel is kind of high, but they are comfortable and quite versatile.  I usually don't wear hats very often, but saw this one on sale at Forever 21 and figured why not give it a try.  The necklace is another great piece to add to top off any look.  Be sure to check out Purple Peridot, they have great accessories at very reasonable prices.  What is one of your Winter staples that never lets you down?

Enjoy any last minute shopping!

Plum Blazer Another Way

Blazer- The Limited (Exact in Merlot, Exact in Gold)~ T-Shirt-Old Navy~ Jeans-Express (Similar, Similar)~ Shoes- Nine West via Macy's (old)

Happy Hump Day Fashion Friends!  I know, I know... It's been over a week since I last posted, but my schedule has been crazy.  In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I'm truly thankful that the semester is nearly over and I get a few days to do much of nothing!  A little later this evening, I'll start to work on my Black Friday and Cyber Monday post.  So, be sure to check back tomorrow or early Friday.
This outfit is somewhat of a remix.  I've styled this blazer and t-shirt in previous posts and decided to mix and match them to create a new outfit.  In the past, I struggled with mixing and matching pieces.  I'd purchase an outfit and consistently wear the pieces together as such.  I've gradually learned to buy pieces rather than outfits and how to "think outside of the box" to maximize my wardrobe without necessarily buying more pieces.  This blazer is very versatile nicely polishes off a pair of jeans and pumps.  Of course, leopard is the new neutral and adds the needed pop to almost any outfit.  What is a go to piece that you can mix and match with a variety of pieces?

I'm wishing everyone a blessed and happy Thanksgiving!
